How Queensland safety certificates work
A roadworthy, officially a safety certificate, is needed before you transfer a registered car to a buyer, bring an interstate car onto Queensland registration, or re-register an unregistered one. It checks tyres, brakes, steering, suspension, body condition, the windscreen and lights.
It is not a full mechanical inspection, and it covers one sale only.
The numbers that matter
- 2 months or 2,000 km
- How long a certificate lasts when a private seller sells, whichever comes first.
- 3 months or 1,000 km
- How long it lasts when a licensed motor dealer sells.
- $102.70
- Queensland Government inspection fee for vehicles up to 4,500 kg GVM, including GST, from 1 July 2026.
- 14 days
- Time to fix any defects and return to the same station for a reinspection.
